The National Football League (NFL) was founded 91 years ago, but something has dramatically changed for the sport in the last two years. That change is social media…
You will find all 32 teams in the league now have their own social media presence and the teams have even hired social media managers to oversee their social media marketing campaigns. So how has social media completely transformed the NFL? Read on…
Let’s take a look at one social media site, Twitter. These days, on many ESPN shows, you will see the hosts answering live questions from their followers via Twitter.
John Thornton, a former defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals and Tennessee Titans, says for the 2011 season, “a majority of players will have Twitter accounts, partly for personal branding, but also because teams have changed their policies. Instead of discouraging players from using Twitter, teams now tell their players to just avoid sharing confidential information. Coaches have accounts, usually under aliases, and teams are following players to keep an eye out on what they’re tweeting” (Van Grove).
NFL teams, like many business owners, realize the importance of engaging with their fan base; comments and questions are typically addressed within a short period of time, which is a necessary guideline in social media. Here’s an example from Drew Brees, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints:
Joel Price, manager of Internet services for the San Diego Chargers, explains that social media “gives fans unprecedented access to players, teams and members of the media” (Van Grove). With social media, NFL players can share their own individual stories. Social media allows companies, whether an NFL team or a salon and spa, to humanize their brand, which enables your fans to feel a deeper sense of connection to you.
So what is next for the NFL and social media? Joel Price believes we will see more location-based services. Either way, social media is here to stay for the NFL and your business. If you have not already started developing your social media marketing strategy, the time is now.
